The three jewels consist of the buddha as the example and inspiration of realizing our inherent wakefulness, the dharma as the wealth of teachings guiding us on a path of personal realization, and the sangha, those who practice meditation and work with selfless compassion for the benefit of others. Khenpo Gawang will talk in depth about the three jewels, what it means to be a Buddhist, and the concept of "taking refuge."

Studying the Heart Sutra brings us to the heart of the relationship between the hinayana and the mahayana teachings of the Buddha. The hinayana teachings introduce the selflessness of the person, the absence of intrinsicexistence of the sense of 'I' or 'Me.' The mahayana teachings deal with the selflessness of phenomena, the absence of intrinsic existence of all appearances, and proclaim the inseparability of emptiness and compassion. This talk will look at these teachings both from the point of view of study and of contemplative meditation practice.
